ECG

Electrocardiography (ECG) is a non-invasive procedure that measures the rate and regularity of heartbeats to determine any damage of the heart. The test is painless and is used to assess the signs and symptoms which could be indicative of heart diseases.

The electrocardiography service is offered at NHG Diagnostics Centres located at all National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP) and Buangkok Green Medical Park. In 2012, NHG Diagnostics introduce digitialised ECG reporting to all centres at NHGPs; all ECG results are sent to doctors electronically in real time, and the machine is able to identify the critical conditions once the ECG is performed. This provides prompt diagnosis and medical intervention, especially patients with critical conditions.

All the consumables used in the ECG test will be disposed after a single use to avoid cross-contamination among patients.

  1. You will be advised to lie on an examination couch in the ECG room. For wheelchair patients, ECG will be done on a sitting position.
  2. Our medical technologist will place a total of10 self-adhesive pads on your chest, legs and arms. The pads are connected via ECG clips to send readings to the ECG machine.
Note: For patients with dextrocardia (right-sided heart), please inform our medical technologist immediately as placement of pads is different.
  3. Prior and during the test, you are advised to relax and breathe normally to obtain a stable ECG reading.
  4. After the reading is done, the clips will be disconnected from the pads, which will be removed and disposed off.
  5. The whole procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
  1. No fasting is required. You can have a light meal before the ECG test
  2. Avoid strenuous activities prior to/on the day of the test
  3. On the day of the test
  • Wear light clothing
  • Do not apply powder, oil and lotion on your body as it may affect the ECG reading. If unavoidable, please kindly inform the staff prior to the test.
